We take a look at the five previous meetings between Liverpool and Real Madrid in European competition.

27 May 1981

Real Madrid 0-1 Liverpool (European Cup final, Parc des Princes)

The last time Real Madrid lost a European Cup final came against the 'Reds' back in 1981. Falling in the period during which Liverpool dominated Europe, Bob Paisley's all-conquering side claimed another European title to add to previous victories in 1977 and 1978.

Liverpool looked dangerous throughout at the Parc des Princes, eventually claiming the win courtesy of Alan Kennedy's 82nd-minute strike after Real defender Rafael Garcia Cortes had completely switched off, with question marks also remaining over Augustin Rodriguez in the Real Madrid goal.

The victory saw Paisley become the first manager to win three European Cups.

25 February 2009

Real Madrid 0-1 Liverpool (Champions League last 16 first leg, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu)

28 years passed before the sides next met and there was an unlikely hero for the Premier League side. With Steven Gerrard only fit enough for a place on the bench due to a hamstring injury, Yossi Benayoun started the game and it was the Israeli who scored the winner, heading home a free-kick from Fabio Aurelio to hand Liverpool victory.

The win was Rafa Benitez's first against Real Madrid in his managerial career.

10 March 2009

Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid (Champions League last 16 second leg, Anfield)

Madrid-born Benitez didn't have to wait long for his second victory over his boyhood club as Liverpool ran riot in the second leg, with Fernando Torres and a fit-again Gerrard putting Juande Ramos' men to the sword.

Torres opened the scoring from a Dirk Kuyt cross, before Gerrard took advantage of a Gabriel Heinze handball to double the lead from the spot. Gerrard struck again just after the break, before substitute Andre Dossena got his first for the club late on to complete the humbling.

Liverpool's charge would then be stopped in the quarter-finals as they were dumped out 7-5 by Chelsea on aggregate.

22 October 2014

Liverpool 0-3 Real Madrid (Champions League Group B, Anfield)

The Spanish giants finally got their revenge in 2014 and they did so in style as they plundered three first-half goals to stun Brendan Rodgers' side.

It was the first time the 'Reds' had shipped three in the opening 45 since that night in Istanbul in 2005, leading Roders to magnanimously admit after the game that 'Los Blancos' were simply a class above.

4 November 2014

Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (Champions League Group B, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu)

Whilst the second leg was a less goal-filled affair, the hosts did their job impressively, dominating once again and securing safe passage via Karim Benzema's strike from Marcelo's cross.

Remarkably, ten of the 14 players that took to the pitch for the home side that day could face Liverpool once again in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev, for the visitors, only Simon Mignolet, Alberto Moreno, Emre Can and Adam Lallana remain.
