In a typically open encounter, Liverpool confirmed their place in Thursday's draw for the Champions League group stage with a 4-2 victory over Hoffenehim, winning 6-3 on aggregate.

Whilst most of the pre-match talk surrounding the club is still about Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool did not let this affect them as they cruised to a 4-2 over German side Hoffenheim at Anfield, with their Brazilian playmaker missing out because of an illness.

The first was very open with lots of action at both ends, like a typical Liverpool encounter, whereas the second half was less eventful, with both teams seemingly accepting their fate.

The home side started very brightly, as an Alexander-Arnold free kick deflected off the wall to give Mo Salah a free header, but the Egyptian international headed wide after 3 minutes.

Just one minute later, Firmino released Mané and the Senegalese striker raced clear but could only hit it straight at Hoffenheim goalkeeper Baumann.

Liverpool deservedly found the breakthrough after 10 minutes when Mané played a clever back-heel to Emre Can, and the German took a touch before burying it from the left hand side of the area.

Mo Salah then doubled the home side's lead eight minutes later, when Wijnaldum's shot came back off the post and the Egyptian was the quickest to react as he knocked it home from close range, There were calls for offside but the linesman rightly never raised his flag.

The Reds were cruising at this point and looked unstoppable when Can scored his second of the game. Firmino broke down the left and floated it across the box for the German midfielder to hammer home from eight yards.

Just as it seemed as if Liverpool were home and dry, Hoffenheim responded through Mark Uth, who had just come on as a substitute. The striker received the ball on the right-hand side of the area and fired the ball across Simon Mignolet into the bottom corner, giving his side a glimmer of hope before the half came to an end.

The second half was fairly routine for Liverpool, with much less goal-mouth action as the result was all but in the bag.

Some sloppy defending on Hoffenheim's part was punished when Henderson stole the ball from Kevin Vogt, running through on goal before squaring to Firmino who made no mistake from close range after 63 minutes.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Klopp will still be concerned with the sloppy defending as Wagner was able to head home from about 12 yards following a cross in from the left, grabbing a consolation for the German side with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Credit has to go to the Hoffenheim fans, who continued to sing despite the fact it was clear their side would not be advancing to the Champions League proper.

For Liverpool it was job well done and Klopp's defensive worries will be put to one side as he eagerly awaits to see who his side will face in the group stage with the draw set to take place in Monaco on Thursday.
