Robert Lewandowski has questioned the inflated spending habits of Premier League clubs ahead of Barcelona's Champions League clash with Newcastle on Thursday.

The Polish striker expressed his surprise at the prices being paid for players with limited experience or achievement.

"In the Premier League, they pay a lot," Lewandowski remarked. "You see players bought for huge sums without even having one strong season. A young player scores ten goals in six months and suddenly a club spends 60 or 70 million."

The forward contrasted this with the expectations of previous years, when players were required to prove themselves over a longer period before commanding such figures.

"Before, you had to achieve something first. Now, you never know if the price they pay truly reflects the quality they are getting," he added.

The player's comments set an intriguing backdrop to Barcelona's meeting with Newcastle, a club backed by Saudi investment and among the Premier League's emerging powers.
