Bayer Leverkusen have held positive discussions with Danish manager Kasper Hjulmand, who has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as coach.

The Bundesliga side are searching for a successor following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag after just two league matches in charge.

Hjulmand, who guided Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, is understood to be the preferred option at this stage. Talks are set to continue in the coming days as Leverkusen weigh up their shortlist of candidates.

Former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has also been linked with the position, but Hjulmand is currently viewed as being ahead in the race. Club executives are said to be impressed with his tactical approach and his ability to manage at both international and club level.

Leverkusen are keen to make an appointment swiftly to stabilise the squad ahead of the coming fixtures. While further names remain under consideration, Hjulmand's profile and availability make him the standout option as things stand.
