Leicester defender Harry Maguire is hoping to force his way into the reckoning for England's World Cup squad.

The 24-year-old travelled to last year's European Championships as a fan but he is hoping that he will have more to offer on the pitch this time around.

Speaking to 'Sportsmail' the defender said that his main aim for this season is to play his way into contention.

‘Fingers crossed (I can get into the squad),’ he said. ‘First and foremost I need a good season for Leicester, performing week-in, week-out, and touch wood, staying injury free. Then I’ll see where it takes me.’

‘Personally I haven’t had any contact from England. But in the summer they spoke to my physio and asked about my injury. They knew I was unavailable. I don’t know whether or not I would have been involved. I want to play for my country. To have that knowledge they are taking me into consideration does give you confidence.’

Maguire is a new face at the King Power having just joined from relegated Hull but he is confident he has made the right move.

‘I wanted to play in the Premier League so when Hull got relegated my mind was set,’ explained Maguire. ‘Spurs were interested at one point. But I wanted to go somewhere I felt I could make an immediate impact. Weighing everything up I felt Leicester were the best option. You can only see the club going up.’

Talking about his style the former Sheffield United man said: ‘I do like to play and pass the ball. But first and foremost I see myself as a defender: blocking, tackling, heading. If I keep a clean sheet I have had a good game, it is as simple as that. If we concede three and I am marvellous on the ball it is no good. You need the balance. You have seen last year with Chelsea, when they were in trouble they did clear their lines.’

Given the options England have at centre-back Maguire faces a tough challenge, but it's a challenge he's certainly up for.
