With around a month and a half until the new season kicks off, the fixture list for the upcoming La Liga season has been released after a draw in Madrid on Thursday.

Just like last season, the 2019/20 campaign will have an asymmetrical calendar, meaning the second round of fixtures don't have to match up with the first round of fixtures.

The competition will last 280 days (40 weeks) and will start on 18th August before finishing on 24th May. During the season, there will be three international breaks - after gameweeks 3, 8 and 13.

First and last gameweeks

Reigning champions Barcelona will kick their season off with a trip to the Basque country to face Athletic Bilbao on the weekend of 17th/18th August. Their eternal rivals Real Madrid will also take a trip up north as they travel to Celta Vigo, whilst runners-up Atlético Madrid open with a home fixture against Getafe.

Around nine months later, the season will draw to a close on what is always a dramatic last day of the season on 24th May. On the last gameweek, Barcelona will travel to Alavés, Atlético will host Real Sociedad and Real Madrid will make the short trip over to play Leganés.

When are the 'Clásicos'?

'El Clásico' is always the fixture that Spanish football fans look for first when the fixtures are released, and this has surely been the case again this year. The first meeting between Real Madrid and Barcelona will take place at the Camp Nou during the 10th gameweek (weekend of 27th October), whilst the return fixture will be played at the Bernabéu in the 26th gameweek (weekend of 1st March).

When are the other big derbies?

The two biggest sides in Madrid will resume their rivalry when Atlético host Real as early as the 7th gameweek on the weekend of 29th September, before 'Los Blancos' take on Diego Simeone's on their home turf on the weekend of 2nd February (22nd gameweek).

Seville's big derby between Real Betis and Sevilla is always one to look forward to, with Betis hosting Sevilla at the Benito Villamarín during the 13th gameweek (weekend of 10th November), whilst Sevilla will welcome their cross-town rivals to the Sánchez-Pizjuan on the weekend of 15th March (28th gameweek).
