Jurgen Klopp was pleased by the impact of Darwin Nunez after his new signing scored to help Liverpool defeat Manchester City 3-1 to win the FA Community Shield on Saturday (July 30th).
Since his arrival, Darwin Nunez has only been questioned. And Klopp is tired of having to defend a player who he knows will succeed at Liverpool.
After saying that "the world is crazy" for criticising his striker and that "strikers live off what they get", Klopp once again defended him after he helped the Reds win the Community Shield.
"It was good, it was really good. It is clear it will get better with time," said Klopp. "We live in a world where everybody gets judged on first sight and that's not helpful for anybody, but it happens constantly," he commented.
The only thing the striker needed was the same as the rest: to get into a rhythm. "We weren't at 100% physically, which is normal, to be honest. In the first pre-season games we weren't at the level we were against City. In the first friendly, we passed him all the balls to keep him going. By the third, he was there. Everyone judged his controls and all that. It's a real joke!" he said.
The coach has no doubt that the player will put an end to the criticism: "You have to deal with it. Darwin Nunez is going to deal with all this brilliantly. We are patient, we know he can do a lot of good things. I liked his impact in the game against City, it was exceptional.
Finally, he assessed the match that ended with the title for them. "It was a good game. City dominated for a moment and it was difficult for us. We had to run a lot, but we got back into the game and were able to finish with goals. I think it was entertaining. We both used what we had available, it was what we expected and that's how it went," he concluded.
