Liverpool's title defence last season was generally one to forget. Klopp had to wing it in defence for most of the campaign, but already this pre-season the German has his full selection of centre-backs available to him. In fact, he may have too many, as Van Dijk, Matip, Joe Gomez and Konate will fight for a place in the starting eleven.

Liverpool have already turned the page on last season season, and are now looking to start a new story with the determination to get back fighting for titles once again. In the 2020/21 campaign, injuries and a number of bad results left Klopp's men far away from a title challenge.

However, in the current season, the German will be delighted that all of the star players in his back line have recovered in time. Van Dijk, Matip and Joe Gomez have already started training with his teammates and look to be fit in time to start the beginning of pre-season . If not, they will certainly be back in time for the start of the 2021/22 season.

This means that Klopp will have to make some cuts. The newspaper 'AS' indicated that Liverpool will have seven centre-backs on their payroll, meaning the likes of Williams, Ben Davies and Phillips will most likely have to find a new destination.

Joe Gomez, Matip, Konate and Van Dijk will play for the two spots in the centre of defence. Everything points towards new signing Konate being Klopp's choice to partner Van Dijk at the back, but that decision is of course yet to be confirmed.
