A goal from Harry Kane sealed it for Tottenham combined with a superb defensive display sent Spurs through against Dortmund.

Tottenham Hotspur have booked their ticket for the last eight of a Champions League after a hard fought 0-1 victory over Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park

Pochettino's team went into the return leg in Germany with a three goal advantage from the first leg, and were certainly made to sweat for their place in their next round.

Tottenham had to soak up 45 minutes of immense Dortmund pressure, but Harry Kane killed the tie early in the second half when he kept his composure in front of goal after a pinpoint pass from Moussa Sissoko which came totally against the run of play.

Dortmund went out on the attack straight from the off and the first real scare for the Spurs defence came in the tenth minute. Guerreiro launched a long pass forward to Reus, but Jan Verthonghen cleared just as the German was about to shoot. A few minutes later, Alcacer fired over, but he found himself in an offside position. Guerreiro and Götze were Dortmund's brightest sparks, but even they could not overcome the rock solid back five of Tottenham.

Dortmund dominated for the rest of the half and their best spell was a five minute period between the 31st and 36th minute when Weigl was denied on two occasions by Lloris and Davies on the line before Lloris pulled off a miraculous save to prevent Götze's shot which was going in the corner. If it was not Lloris, it was the Tottenham defence who prevented Dortmund from opening the scoring. Vertonghen, Davies and Davinson Sánchez all made crucial interventions to keep the score at 0-0.

However, just before that period of relentless pressure, Son had Spurs' solitary chance of the first half. He had just the goalkeeper to beat, but he sent it wide of Burki's near post. When the half-time whistle sounded, Dortmund were right to feel unfortunate not to take a lead into the dressing rooms.  Dortmund had more than 10 chances to Tottenham's 1 and had seen 70% of the possession.

However, the killer blow by Kane in the 47th minute knocked all the stuffing out of the German outfit. Lucien Favre's men then required five goals to progress and their opponents were comfortable for the rest of the game. There was one blemish on the Tottenham victory. Harry Winks limped off in the 55th minute and had to be replaced by Eric Dier, but it did not seem to be serious.

Lloris was outstanding all game and still had time to show more of his class towards the end when he denied Alcacer from point blank range.

Dortmund deserved more from their performance, but it was always going to be a tough ask after the first game and Kane's 23rd goal of the season sealed the tie. Tottenham will definitely play more Champions League football this season, but where their home game will be played remains to be seen.
