Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah announced on Monday his decision not to renew his contract and leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season, while speaking to the microphones of German outlet 'Kicker'.

The looming feeling was there, but the confirmation made it clear. Jonathan Tah has announced his decision to leave Bayern Leverkusen at the end of the season after Sunday's 1-1 draw at St Pauli.

The German centre-back, whose contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions expires in June, revealed that he will not be penning a new deal with the club, leaving as a free agent in the summer.

“Everything was said from the start. There was a point in time when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here, and it remains that way now," the 29-year-old told German outlet 'kicker'.

With his chapter at the BayArena set to be over soon, Tah will be looking to start a new adventure elsewhere from next season onwards, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich particularly keen on signing the former Hamburger SV man.

The Bavarians failed to materialise a move for Tah last term, but could look to make another attempt this time round. Meanwhile, Barca boss Flick is known to admire the player and would want him in his team.

Reports from Spain inform that the 'Blaugrana' are in pole position to bring the defender to Catalunya, with Tah said to be willing to accept a lower salary to join the La Liga giants for the 2025/26 campaign.
