Joao Mario arrived at West Ham to much fanfare, but his performances had left rather a lot to be desired in his first couple of months in East London. That could be set to change thoguh, after the playmaker scored his first West Ham goal in the clash with Southampton on Saturday.

The game always looked like being key in the fight against the dreaded drop, with both sides well involved in the relegation battle.

Despite their recent turmoil, it was West Ham who found the opener inside a quarter of an hour, with the Portuguese endearing himself to the 'Hammers' fans.

Mark Noble set Cheikhou Kouyate away down the right and pulled the ball back to the Inter Milan loanee on the edge of the box to power past a helpless Alex McCarthy.
