The ex-England defender believes that Andres Iniesta would surpass the achievements of Zinedine Zidane's playing days if he wins this summer's World Cup with Spain.

Iniesta will be looking to repeat the success of his nation's 2010 World Cup campaign, in which the Barcelona legend scored the winning goal in the final to beat the Netherlands.

Carragher believes that the attacking midfielder should be discussed in the same way as French superstar Zinedine Zidane.

While Zidane won one World Cup in his career in 1998, the ex-Liverpool centre back feels that should Iniesta add to his troophy collection in Russia, he would surpass the achievements of the Frenchman.

"If he can inspire Spain to another victory – just as he did in 2010 – or even enjoy another stellar tournament, in my eyes he will surpass Zidane," he told The Telegraph.

"Iniesta is the finest Spanish footballer ever. He should be regarded as highly as any of those footballing gods, past and present, whose pantheons we worship."

Iniesta's Spain play their first match of the World Cup on Friday against Portugal in Sochi.
