Jorge Sampaoli has released his 23-man list for the World Cup in Russia and Inter striker Mauro Icardi shockingly fails to make the cut.

29 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions wasn't enough for Icardi to land a place on the plane to this summer's tournament.

The Inter forward was overlooked for compatriots Paulo Dybala, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero, despite the latter still recovering from a knee injury.

Racing Club's Ricardo Centurion and Roma's Diego Perotti also miss the list, with eight being cut from the 35-man preliminary squad named last week.

There are relatively few surprises elsewhere, with Independiente midfielder Maximiliano Meza getting the nod despite making his only senior international appearance to date in the 6-1 defeat to Spain last time out.

Sampaoli's men have been drawn in a potentially tricky Group D alongside Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Here's the full 23-man squad:

Goalkeeper: Sergio Romero, Willy Caballero, Franco Armani.  Defenders: Cristian Ansaldi, Gabriel Mercado, NicolAs Otamendi, Javier Mascherano, Federico Fazio, Marcos Rojo, Marcos Acuna, Nicolas Tagliafico.  Midfielders: Cristian Pavon, Maximiliano Meza, Angel Di Maria, Manuel Lanzini, Giovani Lo Celso, Ever Banega, Lucas Biglia, Eduardo Salvio.  Forwardss: Paulo Dybala, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero.
