The Republic of Ireland travel to Cardiff to face Wales in a winner-takes-all clash where the victor will book their place in the qualifying play-off for next summer's World Cup.

Monday night's encounter is potentially one of the most important games in either country's recent history. Wales are aiming to make just their second appearance at the World Cup finals while Republic of Ireland are hoping to secure a sport at international football's elite competition for the first time since 2002.

Wales sit second in Group D with 17 points, whilst Republic of Ireland are third with 16 points. Both sides could still win the group, but Serbia, the current leaders with 18 points, are expected to win at home to Georgia on Monday night.

Assuming Serbia don't slip up, a win for either side will guarantee second place in the group and book their place in the play-off spot as they would be one of the eight best runners-up.

Wales could still qualify for the play-off with a draw, depending on the result between Ukraine and Croatia in Group I.

The sides' recent history in the fixture favours the visitors, as Wales have failed to score in six of their previous meetings, while the last three meetings in Cardiff have finished level, a result which may end up suiting neither side.

On Friday, Wales secured their first away qualifying victory without Bale since 2009, with a 1-0 victory over Georgia.

Welsh talisman Gareth Bale will miss out again for the home side, and Chris Coleman has seven players who are one booking away from a suspension which would see them miss the first leg of the play-off, should they qualify.

Meanwhile, Ireland striker Shane Long was ruled out for Martin O'Neill's team on Monday morning, after playing in Friday's 2-0 win in Moldova. James McClean and Robbie Brady return to contention after missing the Moldova victory through suspension.
