If anyone doubted the Irish man's words, a tweet from the player in 2016 shows that he effectively said he "loved" Atletico's style of play.
Atletico Madrid surprised everyone and signed Matt Doherty, who become the club's first Irish player. He arrives after rescinding his contract at Tottenham and will be at the Metropolitano until the end of the season, although he hopes to win over Simeone and stay for longer.
In his presentation, the full-back said that Atletico had always been a club which had turned his head. "I've admired the side for a while, you can see it in my tweets", he commented.
And a search on social media reveals that, effectively, Matt Doherty wrote a message saying he loved the Madrid side before going to the club. On Twitter, Matt Doherty wrote this message in 2016: "Absolutely love watching Atletico Madrid play", and it can be seen on his social media.
On the 3rd May 2016, to be precise, Diego Simeone's side were playing the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich. The game ended in a 2-1 loss for the Madrid side, but a 2-2 aggregate score was enough to see them through to the final thanks to the goals they scored away from home. Simeone's men ended up losing that game against Real Madrid.
