He is by no means a household name in Europe, but he may soon be. Spanish striker Igor Angulo is banging in the goals for Gornik in Poland which is why he is currently ahead of Lionel Messi in the race to become the continental top goalscorer.

Known by few, Igor Angulo has plied his trade across Spain, France, Greece and Poland and, at the age of 33, is experiencing one of the best seasons of his career. The Basque player leads the line for Gornik in stellar fashion, with his goals exceeding his appearances for the Polish club.

16 goals in 14 matches make Angulo the top scorer in the Polish top tier, with a further four goals converted in two Polish Cup games. Numbers that surpass those of Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

"There are always many jokes in the dressing room. They ask me about Messi a lot. I cannot imagine winning the Golden Boot, I just want to help my team. I know it's circumstantial. I will not be taken into account, as goals are not worth as much in Poland," the Bilbao-born forward told 'Marca'.

His form in front of goal is such that he currently sits in sixth on the table of top goalscorers in Europe, two points behind Cavani and Falcao. Rather shockingly, Messi trails just behind Angulo even though they share the same number of points.

The Argentine star is in seventh place having scored 12 goals in 16 appearances in La Liga, where goals have a higher value than in Poland. A relatively anonymous footballer, and the only Spanish player out of the top 8 goalscorers around, is rivalling Messi himself.
