Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has opened up on his time working under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, higlighting what he considers to be the key to the club's success.
Klopp guided Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, as well as the runners-up spot in the Champions League a year later.
The German took charge at Anfield in 2015, with Gundogan following him to England 12 months later when he joined Manchester City and speaking in Klopp's autobiography 'Bring the noise', the 27-year-old explained that alcohol played an important role in maintaining the team spirit in the Drotmund camp.
'We went out quite often as a team,' he explained.
'There were a lot of singles in the squad. Sometimes you could see the after-effects in training on Sunday morning.'
Klopp was happy for his players to enjoy themselves, providing that they turned up and did their job on a Saturday, something that one anecdote perfectly demonstrated.
'Somebody told me a few of you went out during the week… I don't know who, I don't want to know,' explained Klopp during a during a team-talk.
'But I can tell you: these players should be happy we won yesterday.
'Otherwise we would have seen the biggest punishment in the history of club football!'
Klopp is yet to experience the same success he had in his homeland with Liverpool, but if Gundogan's anecdotes are anything to go by, he'll certainly be popular with the players at Anfield.
