Atletico Madrid managed to level the scores thanks to Antoine Griezmann's second goal in the 34th minute. However, early in the second half, the Frenchman was given a straight red card after catching an opponent in the face with his studs showing.

Atletico Madrid were having their best spell on the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano. After coming from 0-2 down, the home side suffered a major setback.

In the 52nd minute, Atletico's hero in drawing the Spanish level had to leave the field of play. Griezmann, who went for a ball which was in the air, raised his foot too much and caught Firmino in the face with his studs showing.

German referee Daniel Siebert, perhaps harshly, opted for the red card and sent the striker off the field of play. The home bench could not believe it and protested that it should have been a yellow as they thought it was a simple case of dangerous play.

Siebert took no notice of their complaints and stuck with his decision. Bastian Dankert, the VAR, backed his colleague on the field and Atletico had to play most of the second half with just 10 men.
