Former Arsenal player Merida joins Espanyol

Midfielder Fran Merida has been signed by second tier side Espanyol. The ex-Arsenal and Osasuna man has signed a two year contract.

Espanyol have got their first reinforcement for next season. They will look to get back into La Liga. The midfielder Fran Merida has joined the club from Osasuna. 

He ended his contract in Pamplona after four seasons and he made 29 appearances last season, 14 of them as a starter. He scored one goal and got an assist. 

He has joined Espanyol for two seasons with the option of a third. Merida has passed his medical and he was presented on Wednesday. 

The Spaniard will be remembered by Arsenal fans and he scored a stunner from just outside the box against Liverpool in a Carling Cup tie in 2009. The Gunners went on to win that match 2-1.
