The Football Association (FA) have extended the suspension on Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, whose ban has gone up from three to six matches after being sent off for his horror challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Roberts was sent off just eight minutes into Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round tie, which Crystal Palace won 3-1, after catching Mateta's head with his boot as he raced out to clear the ball. Referee Michael Oliver only issued a red card after a VAR review.

The Millwall goalkeeper initially received a standard three-match ban for serious foul play, but the FA confirmed on Friday that the suspension would be increased from three to six games following a hearing from the Regulatory Commission.

Mateta received lengthy treatment, including oxygen, on the pitch before being stretchered to an ambulance and transported to a hospital, with Roberts facing intense criticism following the incident. Millwall came out in support of their shot-stopper following the abuse.

The Championship side revealed in their statement that Roberts was "devastated" by what had happened and "reached out to Jean-Philippe personally to apologise" after the game, which was "immediately accepted" by the27-year-old Frenchman.
