Despite being known as the 'friendly derby' on Merseyside, there has been nothing friendly between the two sides on the pitch since the start of the Premier League.

The Merseyside derby is thought to be one of the friendlier rivalries in football. Families may be half Everton, half Liverpool and siblings may even opt to support the alternative Liverpool club. However, the stats show that Everton vs Liverpool may not be as friendly as first imagined.

Since the start of the Premier League as we know it in 1992, the fixture has seen more red cards than any other Premier League tie.

The two Merseyside clubs have played each other 48 times, with the matches producing a total of 21 red cards, five more than any other Premier League clash.

Unsurprisingly, the match that has produced the second-most red cards Liverpool vs Manchester United - another derby match which has produced 16 red cards.

The most recent Merseyside derby, Liverpool's 4-0 win over Everton in April saw Ramiro Funes Mori sent off for a bad tackle on Divock Origi.

Meanwhile, boyhood Liverpool fan and club legend Steven Gerrard also saw himself taking an early shower a couple of times against Everton in his career, having been sent off on 27 September 1999 and 25 March 2006.
