Poland's Robert Lewandowski will attempt to equal or surpass the record of 40 goals in one Bundesliga season set by the legendary Gerd Muller in the 1971-72 campaign, which is still held today.
Lewandowski has scored 25 goals in 23 games, was out through injury in two games, and with nine rounds remaining, Muller's record is difficult but not impossible to achieve.
Another record that may be surpassed this season is that of 101 goals scored by Bayern in 1973-74. The Bavarian team has now scored 73 goals, with an average of 2.92 per game. If it maintains that average, it could reach 99 goals, making the record accessible.
And the player has warned that he will be working hard to set the bar high. "I'm better than ever," he told spox.com. "During the two-month hiatus, I was able to work on my fitness more specifically," he explained.
Lewandowski sent a message to his rivals. "We will give everything to win the Bundesliga," he made clear.
In addition to Lewandowski, another player is also chasing records: Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho. Sancho has recorded 16 assists, which could surpass the record set by Sweden's Emile Forsberg of RB Leipzig, who made 22 in 2016/2017.
Sancho, with 14 goals on his personal tally, is also just one goal short of becoming the first player to score at least 15 goals and 15 assists in a season.
Moreover, Sancho has already equalled Miroslav Klose's with Bayern in 2005-06, and Grafite, with Wolfsburg in 2008-09, the record of nine games with at least one goal and one assist.
