Vedran Corluka has retired from the Croatian national team. The defender brought an end to his international career having finished second with Croatia at the World Cup in Russia.

Corluka leaves the national team after 145 appearances, 103 with the first team. "It is time to say goodbye to the shirt. Thank you", said the Balkan in an open letter issued by the Croatian Federation.

"The most beautiful and dearest shirt in the world, the shirt of Croatia. I have had the opportunity to share the strongest emotions with my teammates, as well as with the fans. I cannot thank you enough for your support", Corluka expressed.

Regarding the footballers that he has played with over the years, he said "many will remain friends for life". "This life would be much harder if Croatia were not a family. There are disagreements, but in the end we always support each other,", Corluka added.

There were numerous displays of affection received by the player once his withdrawal was announced. "He was a natural leader on the national team, both on and off the field," said Dalic, Croatia's coach.

"Vedran goes out in style. The silver medal in the World Cup is the biggest reward Croatia have achieved in their history," said Suker, president of the Croatian Federation, once Corluka had announced his goodbye.
