Carragher slams Newcastle owner

Speaking ahead of Newcastle's match against Cardiff on 'Sky Sports', Jamie Carragher launghed a scathing attack on the Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley.

Ashley is a hated figure on Tyneside, overseeing two relegations in his time at the club, and frequently coming into conflict with the fans.

He has previously admitted in court that he intentionally lied to and misled the club's supporters, while this summer has seen him give Rafa Benitez a host of false promises.

Indeed, Benitez continuing as manager is the only thing keeping the peace at Newcastle right now, something that was plain to see for Carragher.

“The best thing Newcastle own is Rafa Benitez and he’s only got a year to go on his contract. There is no way in the world he’ll be Newcastle manager next season if Mike Ashley is still in charge," Carragher said.

"I don’t think Mike Ashley has been trying to sell the club. If you’ve been trying to sell for 7-8 years and you can’t it means there’s a problem - and the problem is the price you want, and the price is a fantasy.

"So the fact they haven’t backed the manager means Newcastle will have a different manager next season that won’t be as good as Rafa Benitez - and there will be a good chance they will go down again if he doesn’t invest.

"He did an interview on Sky where he said anything they make they’ll give back to the manager. I think they’ve made £20m this summer and did similar last year. You’ve got to be giving Benitez the money they’re bringing in at least, surely?"
