Jose Mourinho needs one more League Cup medal to become the most successful manager in the history of the competition. In a strange coincidence, the son of the man whose record he is trying to break could stop him from doing it...

The Manchester United manager is currently the joint-record holder, having won four League Cup trophies along with Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough.

It just so happens that Brian Clough's son Nigel stands in Mourinho's way. His Burton Albion team visit Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup this Wednesday.

The League Cup was Mourinho's first piece of silverware in English football when he won the competition with Chelsea in 2005 and he has continued his pursuit of the trophy with some vigour, something which may be considered unusual in the modern era.

His success in the competition often looked down on by Premier League clubs, is in stark contrast to his rivals.

Astonishingly, Mourinho is the only one of the current 92 league managers to have won the trophy even once.

The Portuguese coach won his second League Cup in 2007 and it was also the first competition he won in his second spell at Chelsea. His United side are the reigning champions after beating Southampton in the final last season. In each of the four seasons Mourinho has won the League Cup, his team have gone on to win other trophies before the campaign was over.

It has proved to be a catalyst success for the former Chelsea boss, as they say, winning becomes a habit. Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell said last year that Mourinho always set his sights on the competition at the start of the season.

"He used to tell us that the League Cup was five games to get to Wembley and play for a trophy," said Sidwell.

Mourinho will certainly want a place in the history books but first he'll have to get past the son of the man he is hoping to surpass.
