Zlatan Ibrahimovic needs two goals against Middesbrough on New Year's Eve to beat Lionel Messi's tally of 51 goals in the calendar year.

Sat on 50 goals in 2016, Ibrahimovic is just one behind Lionel Messi on 51 going into 2017.

A brace against Middlesbrough on Saturday will see him beat the Argentinian for the most goals scored in 2016 in Europe's top divisions.

At the age of 35, it would a formidable achievement for the Swede, who is showing no signs of slowing down.

However, it won't be easy against a Middlesbrough side which prides itself on a solid defence and has performed well against the league's best sides away from home.

Boro were unlucky to draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the season, scored a last minute equaliser against Man City at the Etihad and were only narrowly defeated by Chelsea at home recently, meaning that Zlatan will have his work cut out in his final match of the year.

Do you think Ibrahimovic can beat Messi's goal record?
