The USA are thought to be ready to call for a replay of the World Cup qualifier between Panama and Costa Rica, after a controversial incident helped the hosts get back into the game, eliminating the US in the process.

The US went into their final World Cup qualifier knowing that a draw against minnows Trinidad and Tobago would be enough for them to seal their place in Russia, but somehow contrived to get beat. That has caused them to turn to desperate measures, with rumours suggesting that they may demand for a game that they didn't even play in to be replayed.

The USMNT are up in arms over the incident that led to Panama's equaliser in their 2-1 win over Costa Rica, which helped them to leapfrog the US into the final automatic qualification place.

The goal came from an effort that was turned goalwards by the hand of Gabriel Torres and to rub salt into the wound, it didn't even cross the line. However, there is also a counter-argument that Francisco Calvo was fouled by a the Panama man in the build-up to the incident, which should have resulted in a penalty for the Panamanians.

In the hours since the US' elimination and Panama's historic 2-1 victory, the incident has already been compared to Thierry Henry's handball against Ireland during a play-off for the 2010 world Cup and the South Africa V Senegal scandal during this qualifying campaign.

Nevertheless, it appears that any complaints will be in vain, especially considering Calvo's foul in the build-up to the incident. Had VAR been in place for the game, Calvo would almost certainly have been penalised for a foul and the result would more than likely have been the same.

Despite the protests, nothing will manage to hide the embarrassment of the US, a country with a population of some 300 million, humbled by two countries of four (Panama) and 1.3 million (Trinidad and Tobago).
