Jacob Butterfield belted a brace as Derby stole top spot in the Championship with a 2-0 win against previous leaders Hull on Friday.

Paul Clement's side handed Hull their first home defeat in all competitions this season as the Rams showed their promotion credentials.

Derby's dominant display lifted them from fourth to take over pole position ahead of Saturday's fixtures, when Brighton and Middlesbrough could move into first place.

Hull paid the price for failing to turn their early pressure into a goal threat.

Derby took the lead when the ball fell to Butterfield on the edge of the area and he struck a left-foot shot which went wide of goalkeeper Allan McGregor after 18 minutes.

The visitors scored the second goal their dominance deserved when Cyrus Christie's cross was headed out as far as Butterfield and he volleyed home from the edge of the area in the 34th minute.
