Three Lions legend Terry Butcher wants Harry Kane for England captaincy and thinks ''it is time for a new goalkeeper''

England legend, Terry Butcher, would like to see Harry Kane selected for Three Lions captaincy. Speaking to 'Sportsmail' Butcher noted that the striker ''thrives under pressure, I don't think Harry Kane worries about that. He gets on with it. He has hit the ground running with England and Spurs.''

Kane has already scored a combined 39 goals for 'Spurs' and England this season and is expected to enter the World Cup tournament in excellent form.

The England captaincy has been passed around the dressing room since the departure of Wayne Rooney in 2016. Kane has been selected to captain on four occasions scoring a total of five goals as captain in the qualifying rounds.

Butcher praised the Tottenham striker for his tenacity, saying: "If you provide him with chances, he is never afraid to shoot. He isn't about scoring the perfect goal, he'll happily score a scruffy goal, a mis-hit goal, do whatever you need to do to get a goal.'' The former England defender was emphatic in his support for the 24-year-old, adding ''I would like him as captain - he is young enough to be in a lot of England squads in the future so why not make him captain. Give him that pressure. He does respond well to that.''

England have drawn Belgium, Panama and Tunisia in the group stage, and we are likely to get a glimpse at Southgate's first-choice side in friendlies against Holland and Italy later this month.

Following England's humiliating defeat at the hands of Iceland at Euro 2016, Butcher is optimistic that the team is "going into the World Cup very well prepared but the expectation level, for the first time, is low.''

The contention for the English goalkeeper is intensifying, with Hart's well-established position likely to be challenged after limited game time this season. Stoke City's Jack Butland, Burnley's Nick Pope and Tom Heaton, Everton's Jordan Pickford and Southampton's Fraser Forster are all potential replacements for Joe Hart.

However, Butcher is clear in his choice. The former centre-half said: ''It's Jack Butland for me. He's young and, yes, he's made one or two mistakes but he'll learn from that. He is a bit like Harry Kane, he's going to be in the England squad for a long time to come, so give him that opportunity. Hart has made mistakes for England, every keeper makes mistakes, but he is not playing on a regular basis and it is time for a new goalkeeper to come in. He is experienced, Butland, but doesn't have too many England caps.''
