Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets was forced to sit out his side's pre-World Cup friendly against Switzerland on Sunday as he was hit by a bout of gastroenteritis.

With the World Cup just 12 days away, 'La Roja' found themselves unable to field one of their key players in their first of two warm-up games.

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui opted to field Thiago, Koke and Andres Iniesta in midfield against the Swiss, before the Royal Spanish Football Federation later confirmed the reason for Busquets' absence.

Via Twitter, it was revealed that the defensive midfielder was suffering from a bout of gastroenteritis and had been ordered to remain in the team's hotel in an attempt to prevent the spread of the illness and to begin his recovery.
