Everton and Chelsea had agreed on a fee for Barkley's transfer, but the player himself pulled out of the move at the last minute.

Ross Barkley was set to join Chelsea after Everton and the London club agreed a £30 million fee for the English playmaker.

As reported by Sky Sports, the 23-year-old travelled to London to finalise his move and even began his medical at Chelsea's Cobham training complex.

However, he changed his mind at the last minute and decided to reject Chelsea in favour of a return to Everton.

The England international has turned down the possibility to play with Hazard, Willian and Morata, after it is understood he attempted to force a move away from Goodison Park.

Everton's majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was surprised: 'The two clubs agreed a deal of £35m and personal terms were agreed and after the medical we heard from Ross Barkley’s agent that he had changed his mind. He told us he wanted to reconsider and stay with us for the time being'.

'It was a big surprise but that is football. It has been a very busy transfer window, we have brought in a lot of players especially in attacking areas. We have a lot of new players and it will take some time to gel. We are very happy with business. These are all Ronald Koeman’s signings'.

'We have also Bolasie and Seamus Coleman fit in October, which will help the squad. We would like to finish as high as possible in the table'.
