Brazilian footballer Matheus Fernandes will not continue at Barcelona. His contract at Barcelona runs until 2025, but the club have told him this Tuesday that they do not need him.

Matheus Fernandes will not continue at Barcelona. Even though his contract was running for another four seasons, Barca have announced that they have ended his contract.

His dream of playing at Barca has ended. He was signed by Barca in the January transfer window in the 2019-20 season from Palmeiras for seven million euros. The Brazilian did not end up making his Barca debut until the following season.

When he arrived at Barca, they loaned him out to Real Valladolid, whose president is his compatriot Ronaldo Nazario. They were fighting to stay in the division. He play three games in La Liga during that half a season, two of them as a starter.

He returned to Barcelona without having shown anything and it soon became clear that there was no place for him in the Barca camp.

Thanks to the big squads and larger benches as a result of the five subs rule, Matheus Fernandes was included 30 times last season, but he only played once. That was on 24th November in the Champions League against Dynamo Kiev.

Now at 22 and given the fact he would very likely spent most of it not playing, Barcelona have announced that they have terminated his contract which expired on 30th June 2025. He is now a free agent and he can move to wherever he wants to.
