Gareth Bale and Real Madrid managed to prevent the Welshman taking up one of the non-EU spots for this season as a result of Brexit. However, Ramon Fuentes of 'Mundo Deportivo' says from June 2022 this will no longer be the case, The footballer will occupy one of the three non-EU player spots Real Madrid have.
Gareth Bale's future at Real Madrid is already problematic because of poor performances, injuries and a large salary, but there is also another problem. From June 2022, Bale will be classed as a non-EU player.
It should have happened beforehand, but an agreement between the Spanish FA (RFEF), LaLiga and the Spanish players' association (AFE) meant it was postponed until the 2022-23 season. This was to prevent clubs having problems when it came to altering their squads as clubs' finances were badly affected during the 2021-22 campaign as a result of the pandemic.
Journalist Ramon Fuentes says in 'Mundo Deportivo' that this agreement expires at the end of the current season and clubs are only allowed three non-EU players in their squad. This gives Florentino Perez and the board another reason to sell Bale. At the moments, there is no news of the club trying to renew him.
January looks set to be a very interesting month as we should then know what Real Madrid want to do with him. The club might try and see him six months before the end of his contract although the most likely scenario is that he will become a free agent in the summer.
