According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have failed in a late bid to bring Conor Gallagher to Old Trafford after Atletico Madrid rejected their loan approach in the closing stages of the transfer window.
The Spanish side stood firm in their position, insisting the midfielder was not available on a temporary deal.
It marked the second rejection in quick succession, with Crystal Palace also having an enquiry knocked back just a week earlier. Both Premier League clubs had identified Gallagher as a valuable addition, but Atletico were consistent in their refusal to consider a loan exit.
The England international only arrived in Madrid last summer and has quickly been earmarked as a key figure in Diego Simeone's plans. With the new season underway, Atletico never minded weakening their squad so soon after his arrival.
