Ryan Giggs has selected Williams based on his performances for Wales, and not his form at Everton this season.

Williams has remained Giggs' pick for the Wales captaincy despite coming under fire for both his performance and his on-pitch behaviour. The defender was sent off in match against Burnley for violent conduct, prompting a barrage of social media abuse against him.

However, the 33-year-old has travelled with the Welsh team to Nanning in China to compete in a Far East friendlies tournament

Since the incident, Wales coach Giggs has come out in support of Williams, insisting: ''All I can really gauge are Ash's performances for Wales and they have been fantastic. I have had several chats with him. He met all the staff. It was the day after he got sent off, so it was great for him to come down.''

Giggs implied that Williams' performances for Everton were perhaps hampered by the disruption at Goodison Park: ''He has been a tremendous captain and club form, for some of the players, might not be what it is for Wales.''

He also added that the squad have only one focus now that that is ''when they come away with Wales [he] want them to perform.''
