Former Real Madrid star Jorge Valdano was recently interviewed on radio program 'El Transistor', broadcast on 'Onda Cero'. During the interview he talked about all things football: Atletico Madrid V Barcelona, the La Liga standings, Real Madrid and a certain Mr Marco Asensio.

"Asensio shines no matter where he plays, but he does remind me somewhat of Messi when he plays for Argentina. When he gets hold of the ball he invariably makes something happen, but there are times when he doesn't get involved in a move because his team-mates can't find him," the former Argentina international explained.

The former Real Madrid boss' comparison with the Barca star comes just weeks after it was reported that Real boss Zinedine Zidane told Asensio that he had the best left foot he has seen since Messi, and it once again served to highlight Asensio's enormous potential and the high esteem that current and former pros hold him in.

Futhermore, the 62-year-old gave his views on the match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday evening, which finished 1-1: "I really enjoyed the game between Atletico and Barca. I think Atleti just ran out of steam towards the end."

One particular player from that game caught the Argentine's eye, with Antoine Griezmann receiving plenty of praise from Valdano: 'It's really difficult when a player is already a world star but maintains the humility of Antoine Griezmann," he explained.

Finally, Valdano gave his thoughts on Real Madrid's current predicament. "The talent in the Real Madrid squad is not up for debate, but you can't afford to give your rivals a head start in the table," he concluded.
