Due to a clause included in his contract, the Gunners will return for Dries Mertens in the summer after they tried to sign him in the last transfer window, according to 'Calciomercato'.

Towards the end of August, Arsenal were in the market for an attacking winger with the looming threat of Alexis Sanchez's departure. The Gunners were linked with moves for the likes of Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez, but Arsene Wenger wanted Napoli forward Dries Mertens.

The Chilean's move to the Etihad never materialised, meaning Arsenal did not bring in a replacement last summer, but with Sanchez's future is all but sorted, the north London outfit have one eye on the market.

Mertens penned a contract extension at Napoli at the end of last season, which made it difficult for Wenger to pry him away from the Serie A team. A task that will be made much easier thanks to a €30 million release clause included in his contract that could be triggered next summer, as revealed by 'Calciomercato'.

The 30-year-old Belgium international, who scored 28 league goals for Napoli last season, could become a transfer target for the Gunners once the current campaign comes to an end.
