Arsenal are reportedly keen on a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January as they begin to prepare for life after Alexis Sanchez.

Chilean Sanchez looks set for a move to the red half of Manchester after a series of developments over the weekend, with a decision on his future now said to be "imminent".

With Arsenal unwilling to sanction any departures without a suitable replacement in place, they have been quick to identify Gabonese striker Aubameyang as their main January target.

Reports on Monday claimed that Arsenal are "optimistic" of doing a deal this month, with head of recruitment Sven Mislinat knowing the player well, having previously brought him to Signal Iduna Park during his time at Dortmund.

The 'Gunners' are expected to have to part with a fee in the region of £60m to seal Aubameyang's signature.

At the age of 28, the striker does not fit Arsene Wenger's usual profile for potential signings but would certainly appease the fans who have demanded a big-name replacement for Sanchez.

Reports in Germany suggest that Aubameyang may have played his last game for Dortmund after he was left out of the squad for the 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg after missing a team meeting.
