The Sunderland manager has revealed he has turned to meditation through this hard time, as he tries to steer his team away from the drop.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has revealed he meditates in order to remain focused on the task in hand, with his club on the brink of being relegated from the Premier League.

The 61-year-old has claimed he regularly meditates in order to prevent himself from becoming overwhelmed by the possibility of seeing his team relegated, with only three games remaining.

"It helps you cope with the pressure you come under in this job," Allardyce claimed.

"I read the science and it helps to reduce your blood pressure and keeps you calmer.

"I am not a great sleeper, so 30 minutes of meditation, they say in research, is as good as two or three hours sleep, which is why you feel better."

Sunderland are one point from safety and with a game in hand, but Allardyce has revealed it is not just the pressure of playing Premier League football which he is dealing with.

"It's about saving people's jobs," he added. "There are hundreds of staff working at this club but that workforce would have to be severely cut if we got relegated.

"It would be devastating. I feel that responsibility. There will be Sunderland fans losing their jobs, many of whom have been here for a long time and love this place."
