The Argentine FA's president Claudio Tapia wants captain Lionel Messi to play less games for Barcelona in order to stay fresh for the 2018 World Cup.

Lionel Messi, who has started 33 of 39 games this season for Barca, will no doubt be a key player for Argentina at the World Cup. It was, after all, his hat-trick against Ecuador that secured Argentina's presence in the competition and proved the individual brilliance he is capable of.

Messi's playtime for his club has worried Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia who told 'TYC Sports' "we have spoken to Messi about taking care of himself and about playing less for Barcelona."

Tapia is also hoping the current form of his nation's players continues as Argentina look to go one step further than the runners-up medals they earned in Brazil four years ago.

"I hope all the players arrive in the level they are at the moment. Sergio Aguero is playing outstanding right now and Lionel Messi is always at the top of his game," he said.

Ahead of their trip to Russia, Argentina are preparing for a friendly fixture against Catalonia in which Messi could face Barca teammate Gerard Pique amongst others.
