453 days is far too long

You have to cast your mind back over a year to remember the last time a Barcelona player scored a goal away from home in the Champions League. Their only away goal in this year's competition was an own-goal scored by Sporting Lisbon player Sebastian Coates. It has been 453 days since the Catalan scored outside of the Camp Nou, in their 2016 victory at the Celtic Park.

More than a year has passed since a Barcelona player got their name on the scoresheet in the Champions League outside of the Camp Nou. This lengthy wait is far too long for a side whose aspiration is always to be the best in Europe. In London, with Chelsea as their opponents, Ernesto Valverde's side will be desperate to put an end to this unwanted record

No matter what the result, notching a goal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday would be a great achievement for the Catalan side, given that goals away from home in the Champions League pretty much count for double. Away goals are precisely what has been missing from this Barca side, who have suffered more than a few setbacks in Europe in the past few years.

You have to go back to the 23rd of November 2016 for the most recent CL away goal scored by a Barca player. It was at Celtic Park, back when Neymar was still a Barcelona player, and the scorer was Messi, of course. Since then, Barcelona have failed to score in Paris, Turin, Lisbon (although Sebastian Coates gifted them a goal), Athens, and Turin again

Barca need to end this run on Tuesday, and Messi needs to break his Chelsea duck, having never scored against the London side. The Argentinian travels to London in the middle of a goal-drought, and will be looking to revive his form against a Chelsea side that like to play on the counter-attack.

Another man looking to end an unwanted record will be Luis Suarez. The Uruguyuan has also had a hard time away from home in the Champions League recently, not scoring outside of the Camp Nou since September 2015, when he notched against Roma. Barcelona will be hoping they can break their curse and move one step closer to the quarter finals of Europe's biggest competition.
