2017 is on track to be a record-breaking year as far as transfer fees are concerned. That's according to FIFA's transfer matching system (TMS) which states that the first six months of this year have seen $1.405bn spent, the highest figure in the last five years.
That is higher than the $1.292bn spent in the first half of 2016 and the $1.178bn spent in 2013 according to data from the system of Football's governing body. Which also shows a record number of transfers.
In the first half of this calendar year there have been 6,957 transfers involving players registered with FIFA, over 200 more than last year's figure (6,742).
However, this June paled in comparison to last year, with less transfers (551) and money spent ($208.3m) in June 2017 compared to June 2016. Though plenty of European sides are just getting their summer business started.
English clubs spend the most:
Of those 551 signings, the majority (304) were moves between European teams. Though some way behind there were also instances of moves between teams from: Asia (38), Africa (24), moves between Europe and South America (26) and moves between Europe and Africa (25).
Unsuprisingly, English clubs spent the most during June, coughing up a total of $105.6m, way ahead of clubs from Brazil ($16.3m) and French sides ($15.2m).
Portuguese and Dutch clubs the biggest sellers:
When it comes to the biggest sellers, Portuguese clubs made a total of $77m in June, followed by Dutch clubs ($35.5) and Italian clubs ($25.2) according to data from FIFA's TMS.
