Amorim frustrated with Man United's goalscoring troubles

Manchester United went from scoring five goals in their Europa League heroics against Lyon to being unable to find the back of the net in their 1-0 defeat to Wolves, who secured Premier League survival at Old Trafford.

Head coach Ruben Amorim insisted that his team produced a better performance than their Midlands visitors, but admitted that their efforts could only be in vain after they failed to strike past Dan Bentley between the sticks.

"If you look at the game, we were the better team. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter because it's the result that counts," the Portuguese told reporters his players succumbed to an eighth home league defeat this term.

"We created a lot of chances, we controlled the game, we held some good players. In the end, one set piece changed the game. It's really frustrating to end the game like this," he continued.

Reminded that United's 15th defeat this season was the most they had ever suffered since 1990 -  club record in the Premier League era - Amorim said: "We have a plan, we talk about that every day. The season is not over, let's focus on that."

Pablo Sarabia's free-kick secured the points for Wolves, which left the Red Devils languishing in 14th place. "We have to be honest with the fans, the team lacks a lot of things," Amorim said. "If we don't score, we are not going to win. We have to focus on improving the team step by step."

Man United, who face Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semi-finals, desperately need Rasmus Hojlund to end a miserable run of one goal in his last 28 games, especially with Joshua Zirzkee ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.

Asked to comment on the Denmark striker's goalscoring troubles, Amorim said: "I think if you look at the games, we have several players that miss big chances, not just Rasmus.

"But of course, Rasmus, the aim is to score goals because he's a striker, but it's a team thing. I already said that. Our team should score more goals, and it's not just Rasmus missing chances.

"The only way I know is to work on him, show him the videos. Like you said, he needs to score a goal - he will not score if he is out (of the team), so I try to manage that during games. But he needs to score one. Maybe that's all a striker."
