Zinedine Zidane tried to push for Paul Pogba's signing until the very last minute. Indeed, the Frenchman is aware that his midfield could use a younger, fitter player for key games where Madrid's aging, injury-prone midfield struggles to cope like before.
But the transfer market is closed, and Zidane could not get his wish. Instead, his go-to midfielders are injured, with Luka Modric, Isco Alarcon and Fede Valverde all ruled out. The Frenchman is therefore only counting with James Rodriguez's talents in the midfield, keeping in mind that this position is not his natural one.
The exits of Dani Ceballos and Marcos Llorente have meant that although Zidane managed to get rid of players who were not getting any minutes, he is now faced with almost no options for when injuries unavoidably strike. His options for a restructuration are limited, with Lucas Vasquez or possibly even Gareth Bale making their way into the starting eleven for a 4-4-2 formation.
In theory, the Colombian is pinned as a favourite to make a start in the midfield with Casemiro and Toni Kroos joining him, allowing an attack possibly lead by Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale.
