It was the sort of game that would have been labelled a "relegation showdown" had it fallen between March and May and it had an extra edge to it from the off as both sides desperately looked to claim an invaluable three points to kick-start their campaign.
In the end, it was homegrown hero Zaha who proved Palace's match-winner, coming up big when his side most needed it.
The Ivory Coast international missed the defeat to Southampton before the international break with a groin problem, but showed no signs of a lingering issue as he burst away from two defenders to lash an effort beyond Jonas Lossl with 38 minutes gone.
Huddersfield went direct in the second half in their search for a leveller, but were left frustrated as the closest they managed to come was when Aaron Mooy clattered the post with a volley.
They ultimately failed to find a route back into the game, a familiar story, having failed to score in 24 of their last 43 Premier League games.
The result leaves Huddersfield hovering above the drop zone with two points from five games, whilst Palace move up to 11th.
