"Xabi makes Arda Guler adapt to different roles," says Montella

Vincenzo Montella, the Turkey head coach, acknowledged the talent of Lamine Yamal, a player who "entertains and brings joy to the fans", but stressed that the Spanish national team, who they face in their second match of the 2026 World Cup European qualifying stage, is much more than just one player.
"Lamine Yamal is an extraordinary player who enjoys himself on the pitch and entertains the fans. He has immense talent, but Spain is not just about him. We need to consider how to defend against him, whether it requires more than one player, but they have many solutions and great quality," he said in a press conference in Konya, where Turkey will host the Spanish national team this Sunday.
He also praised Arda Guler, who is becoming a key figure for Turkey, and acknowledged the progress he is making at Real Madrid since Xabi Alonso's arrival.
"He's been playing more consistently since the end of last season. He's developing well, and Xabi is making him adapt to different roles, which is beneficial because he can contribute in any position. He has the quality to do so," he lauded.
He welcomed the return of Spanish players like Dani Carvajal and Rodri Hernandez, following serious knee injuries: "It's a joy to see them back playing for those of us who love football. Their quality enhances the game."
And he is confident that his team will rise to the occasion against one of the top teams right now. "Spain are a very good team; they haven't lost in a long time and have the potential to emulate what they achieved between 2008 and 2012. But that's an incentive in a match that everyone wants to play. We'll need to be perfect in defence and attack. We have the tools to achieve a good result," he said.
