Uruguay finished second in South American qualifying behind Brazil, though they were 10 points shy of the 'Seleçao', they eased comfortably over the line and avoided the late drama that many sides faced.

The South Americans made it through to the round of 16 after finishing second in a group that contained England, Italy and Costa Rica. Surprisingly, Uruguay have won the World Cup on two occasions, first on home soil in 1930, then again in 1950. They have featured at 12 tournaments, with their last stand-out performance coming in 2010 when they reached the semi-finals.
