Fans at the Azteca stadium had no idea what was about to hit them when they took their seats to watch their beloved nation in the last-16. Mexico, in their own back garden, lined up to go toe-to-toe with the Bulgarians in the Estadio Azteca that, brimming with nervous excitement, played host to a moment of football wonder.
With 34 minutes on the clock, the Mexicans charged goalwards. Juggling the ball on the edge of the dee, Negrete played an airbourne one-two with a team-mate before stunning the 114,000 fans in attendance.
Adjusting his body to take the ball at an angle, Negrete elegantly leaped into the air and sent a venomous volley hurtling towards Borislav Mihaylov between the sticks. The goalkeeper pounced down to his left, but the dive was simply aesthetical and Negrete's strike sailed into the net. Cue a symphony of roars from the stands.
Mexico went on to win the game 2-0 but were unfortunately knocked out by West Germany in a quarter-final that went all the way. As the footballing world knows, nobody beats the Germans on penalties.
Negrete's wonder goal was ultimately eclipsed by Diego Maradona's 'hand of god' and weaving solo effort that saw him dazzle a dumbfounded England side.
