History: Located in the Rostov Oblast, the city is an important port and trading centre, situated near the delta of the River Don with access to the Black Sea. The Russians first established themselves in the area in 1749, with the aim of controlling the trade with Turkey. It holds strategic importance as both a naval and railway hub, known as the 'Gateway to the Caucasus', and was occupied by the Germans on multiple occasions during the Second World War. In more recent times the city has experience rapid economic growth and it is an industrial centre, particulary in the manufacture of helicopters. There is even a Starbucks in the city centre, very rare in this area of Russia.
What to do: The Palace of Sports would be a worthwile trip for any athlete, while a plethora of theatres, museums and libraries will be enough to keep anyone occupied. There are also a number of parks, gardens and even a zoo to take a stroll in.

A brand new venue, due to be completed in the coming weeks, the stadium is designed by Populous. Russian Premier League side, FC Rostov, will move in at the close of the tournament. The stadium will feature an irregular design of the stands and roof, and its construction is hoped to stimulate the growth of a new industrial area in the city.
