United's loss on Friday, added to defeats to Newcastle and Huddersfield this season, means that for the first time ever they have been beaten by all three promoted sides in one season. This seems to underline an attitude problem in Jose Mourinho's squad, something that Jose himself pointed to after the game, saying his side lacked "desire" to fight.
Speaking in the post-match analysis, United legend and now-pundit Gary Neville said that he feels the lack of effort from some of the players spells the end of their careers at the club. "It felt to me like it was a final straw for him [Jose] with some of the players," Neville stated, speaking on 'Sky Sports'. "The trust that you need with players had gone."
The former defender expressed in no unclear terms what he thought of the 'awful' performance. "I'm trying to find the word that you'd use to describe that kind of performance. I've said 'woeful' and 'awful', but it was a shocker from first minute to last minute," the pundit slammed.
"Mourinho said it was important to him that four points were achieved to finish second and he couldn't convey that to his players. When you can't get your message into your players then either the manager has to go or the players have to go."
He continued by explaining that if it's the players or the manager that has to change, in this case it will have to be the players. Mourinho is a manager with great status and experience, and Neville believes that Jose will have a clearout in summer.
"At this moment in time Manchester United are not going to lose Jose Mourinho, so he's going to make some big changes in that dressing room," he stated.
"My view is that ultimately he doesn't like some of those players. He's had enough of them and they are going to go. That's what I drew from it.
